Friday Photos: Breccia

Today I'm blogged out for some reason, so I'm just going to upload these quick pictures of a breccia I found more than a year ago on the hill above our little house in eastern Nevada. Note Double AA Batteries for scale.
I'm not really going to speculate on the origin of this breccia, other than to note the abundant iron oxides in the breccia matrix and to note that some of the fragments near the edge of the breccia (and some in the middle) are fractured and appear to be cut by iron-oxide veinlets.
This is the rock that contains the breccia. The photo makes it look as though the breccia is relatively narrow and possibly bedding or fracture related. A quick walk up the hill and better note taking might answer our questions, but first we'd have to find the breccia boulder, then we'd have to search uphill or up canyon to find the outcrop from whence this rock came. I'm not going to do that tonight - and don't expect you to do so, either.

UPDATED 6Aug2014 to remove a certain personal reference.

Cath, it's been an extended birthday what with wishes still coming in over the blog, and via twitter and fb - and I just got a package and card in the mail from Alaska! :)
