This space has been fairly quiet this year, and while I'd like to blame my lack of posting on work, the truth is that most of the blame falls on ye olde personal life, which has been in a dumpster since early November. But rather than going into the sordid details here, I'm going to post on something that was big on Twitter a couple months ago, thereby continuing my present trend of running behind (on the blog — thankfully not elsewhere).
Yes, that's it: #fieldworkfail BINGO. I present an unadorned, unplayed BINGO card:
It was Kat Black who presented this Bingo card to fieldwork-Twitter (largely but not entirely composed of biologists and geologists of various flavors), back on the 30th of March. Most of the entire ensuing Twitter convo can be read here (though I don't know how long Twitter-search keeps things available, so maybe the link will fail in the future).
Thinking about my field work history in some detail, I created this BINGO card from my experiences. As you can see, I did get a BINGO. Without the free space in the middle, though, I wouldn't have made it.
By way of a little explanation, I've added a few details in the next version of the same Bingo card:
You might notice that I replaced "Animal attack" with "Plant attack" and added an extra mark. While I've been stared at closely by 3 to 4 coyotes at once and also by a protective stallion once or twice — the former causing me to unnecessarily grab my rock hammer and the latter causing me to give up on that canyon for that day — I've never been attacked. I have, however, been mercilessly attacked by wild cholla balls, which definitely have a mind of their own and can be quite persistent in trying to attach themselves to parts of your body, especially feet and legs.
(I've had a few close encounters with wild cats — mountain lions, bobcats, and a possible jaguar — and I've come closer than I prefer to snakes several times, and closer than they prefer judging by their rattles or swift slitherings away from me — but these were merely close encounters, with none of them resulting in anything resembling an attack.)
In my line of work, especially when doing mineral exploration recon, a moderately routine hazard not listed would be getting shot at or being run off a property with a gun, which has happened to me once (American Girl), maybe twice or thrice — although the second time was unclear and so probably doesn't count (Old Woman Mountains), and the third time was merely a threat without any visible gun brandishment (Tumco). In addition, there can be various helicopter-related hazards, the least hazardous of which might be being left out by the helicopter pilot, who for various reasons, including forgetting part of the crew (me!), might not pick you up — a story that was told in brief here.

Tales of the Mojave: We're Almost Ready to Go
The Road South:
Our story—the 1981 story of Allie and I doing recon down in the Mojave—began in Reno in the spring of the year and ended unexpectedly and abruptly in Needles before the end of June. I no longer remember exactly how long we spent in the east-central Mojave, but we looked at six different target areas—depending on how you count them—and we probably spent at two to five days in each area.

We had files of topographic maps, geologic maps, published reports, books, and copies of company reports in plastic file boxes that would help to keep everything organized while also protecting it from water and the pervasive Mojave dust. We had Brunton compasses in leather holders, ready to attach to our belts. And we had various mapping paraphernalia: mechanical pencils with black, blue, and red leads; colored pencils; pens and markers; and six-inch C-Thru® protractor-rulers of various scales: 10-50, 20-40, 10-20, and 30-60. We had field notebooks to hold notes and sketches, and we had aluminum clipboards that would protect our maps, air photos, and reports. We carried everything we needed for any particular day’s traverse in Filson® survey field vests[1], on belts, or in backpacks. A geologist, fully attired and field ready, is easily distinguished from desert rats, ranchers, and routine hikers.
We also had a pile of camping and cooking gear scattered in the back of the truck: pots and pans; plates, bowls, and utensils; a gas Coleman stove and fuel for said stove; sleeping bags and sleeping pads; a tent, which we didn't use while down in the Mojave; a tarp or two; and other miscellany. We may have rustled up some of the gear from a stash in the company warehouse—though had we not been timely in choosing gear (and we were late that year), we would have been out of luck. A certain person's name was used to describe what happened if you didn't grab your gear in time, or if you got stuck with second-rate supplies. Had his last name been Gibbs, it would have been called "getting Gibbsed."

Notes:
[1] It looks like the standard survey vest isn't being made anymore—at least I don't see it on the C.C. Filson website. Perhaps that's because so many geos are now wearing safety vests much of the time. I hope my current beige style-12 and orange style-8 vests will last indefinitely: I still use them on field trips, while hiking, and on most sampling and mapping excursions. My beige vest is partly held together by duct tape; a gaping hole in the lower right area developed after carrying a leaky acid bottle inside the inner pocket. (I really don't like having things hanging from my belt, though I did used to wear my Brunton that way. Now I stick it in one of the side pockets.)↩

Things You Find in the Field: An Old Outhouse
MOH and I were driving around several years back—after we had completed some field work with some former Former Mining Company employees—when we came across this old outhouse with a nicely carved crescent moon in the detached door. With an old, probably 1-2 megapixel camera, we took pictures of each other sitting inside the outhouse.
Some time later, probably near the end of that same year, we decided to make up some original Xmas cards. This was back in the Windows 98 era (I think), and we had a desktop computer and an off-brand card-making program.

Friday Field Photo: Cannonball Chert
Back in my eastern Nevada field days, I was lucky enough to go on a stratigraphy tour that took me to several good examples of chert nodules in the mostly Pennsylvanian Ely Limestone.
In the 1950s and 1960s, R. A. Breitrick and J. E. Welsh described the detailed stratigraphy of the Ely Limestone in the area of Ely and the Robinson mining district (with Breitrick, at least, continuing to work in the area to this day). They divided the formation into mappable units, W through C, bottom to top. (Their units A and B have since been placed in the overlying Permian Riepe Spring Limestone.) The only summary of this stratigraphy I could find online is shown here (pdf; Maher, 1995, p. 22).
Several units within the Ely, notably units S, R, P, L, and F, contain cannonball cherts (although I'm not sure about the details of units T, U, V, and W: I can't find my field sheets in the mess my office is currently in!). Theses photos are most likely from S, R, or P (my thoughts).
This is the best example I have of a chert nodule that is approaching "cannonball" in size and shape. Apparently, cannonball chert nodules can weather out and end up looking a lot like loose cannonballs. An excellent example of a loose cannonball nodule can be seen here [pdf] on page 27 (Maher, 1995, Fig. 7C).
These photos were taken in the spring of 2007 on the northeastern slopes of Rib Hill, a location that might or might not be accessible from Highway 50 or Route 6 via a side road formerly known as S.R. 44 or S.R. 485 (the location might be behind a locked gate).

Things You Find in the Field: Pyramidal Objects #4
It's not a pyramid, unlike the three pyramidal objects (#1, #2, #3) I posted about a couple years back. It's actually a frustum, in this case a pyramidal frustum, one based on an oblique, irregular, triangular pyramid. That is, it's a "chopped" triangular pyramid.
The rock itself was on an alluvial fan not far from Walker Lake; it was pointed out to me by MOH, who spotted it on our second-day hike to some Pleistocene shorelines. Although it was lying on a grusy soil amidst large granitic boulders, the rock looks porphyritic. I don't know if it's a porphyritic version of the granitic intrusive rock lying around, or if it's extrusive in origin.

Finding a Thesis: Up to the Millsite and Back Again
We paused our expedition in the Silver Peak area, after passing through a rusty, out-of-service gate in Eagle Canyon and arriving at a locked gate farther up the northern road to the top of Mineral Ridge.
My goal in trying to gain access to Mineral Ridge was to check out the Mary Mine: It was one of several old mines on my list of possible thesis areas. In order to see what I was trying to do, let's look once again at the maps. And remember from my previous three posts about the Silver Peak area, there were no mines shown on the old 2° map, so I won’t show that map again: The 2° sheet was useless to me.
On the Silver Peak 15’ map, the Mary Mine is shown as an adit just below the main road to the Mary-Drinkwater complex in the NW 1/4 of section 6.
Which mine was I aiming for? I was shooting for the Mary Mine, the only mine named on this part of the 15' map. As for other mine names and locations, I would have gone with the names Spurr used in his 1906 report: Spurr was there when the mines were first active and had just been named, so surely his locations were correct. My other options for accurately identifying which mine was which would have been to return to Silver Peak to locate an oldtimer or two to see what they might say—and some of the oldtimers would have been extant back then, but they are now mostly long gone—or to go to the Esmeralda County courthouse in Goldfield in order to research the names of the old claims and patents.
As we can see above, Spurr had the Drinkwater located up the old road, the one that is still hand-rocked in a couple places. Spurr put the Mary Mine at the site of an old mill complex, and he placed the Last Chance Mine in Custer Gulch, which is south to southeast of Eagle Canyon. The old mill isn't shown on the 15' map, and Custer Gulch isn't named.
The Drinkwater, probably a single operating mine or even a single claim when Spurr visited in 1906, was shown on the 1963 map above—and on the 1987 map below—as a complex of shafts, adits, and prospects near the head of Eagle Canyon (and now it's covered in part by a more recent open pit). It was the Drinkwater complex that I could see from below, and it was what I headed for when I left my Opel.
As for the Mary Mine itself, for this narrative I'll take it as the adit located not far above Spurr's location. And I’ll take the Last Chance Mine as the set of shafts, adits, and prospects in Custer Gulch (see below).
I love the names on some of these maps! And, gosh, the Mary Mine isn’t even shown on this more detailed, more recent 7.5' quad. Spurr’s Mary Mine location is the same as what's shown above as “WT – Ruins” in the north-central part of Section 6.
I parked the Opel—as near as I can tell from my 1976 memory and from the memory I have of going up and down that road several, I mean innumerable, times in the 1980s and 1990s (mostly down, because that was the most impressive direction to travel, last attempted in 2000 when the road didn’t go through due to locked gates)—on the "road" (remember, the road was washed out) just below the red/blue arrow.
As for the old road, maybe you can see it here on this enlarged Google Earth view, up near the pass to the other side of the hill near the Oromonte and Wedge Mines, where I used to work back in the 1980s. A good portion of the hand-rocked road has been destroyed since I last drove it sometime in the 1990s.
The view driving down the old road was truly spectacular, and the drive was breathtaking, even hair-raising if you had never seen a road like that. The road was incredibly narrow, wide enough to drive down but no wider, and it was quite rocky. The effect, for the driver, was one of intensified concentration: It was an exercise in dodging rocks and making sure the left tires never went over the edge. The edge, a seemingly endless drop off to the north, was ever present, right there where a driver might usually prefer to place the left-front tire (once the left-front or right-front tire is placed, according to one’s best judgement hopefully based on past experience, the position of the rest of the vehicle, in this case a mid-80s Ford half-ton pickup, naturally follows). I thought of it as the scenic route: a route not taken daily because it took longer to get back to Silver Peak, a route that took even longer as a side trip on the way back to Reno from the south. It was also a fun route, fun because I could navigate the road with aplomb: I could dodge this rock to the left or right by careful placement of the front tires; I could make sure the front differential missed some critically high or pointed rock near the center of the road; I could place the left tire as close to the nearly overhung edge as needed, providing that the berm, if present, wasn't too soft to drive on.
It was also fun to take a passenger down that road, especially if they had never seen so precipitous a road or so expansive an overview. This historic, hand-built road, with a superbly constructed rock wall holding up the steep, north side, was not intrinsically dangerous, and it wasn’t the narrowest or sheerest road I had ever driven up by the mid-1980s, but with the extremely spacious view out the front windshield, it was impressive to anyone who had not been up or down a road quite like that. I remember unease and tension from some less experienced passengers (hopefully it wasn’t my driving!).
After hiking uphill a ways, I come to the part of the road that curves around an unused core shack (which is there from my future memory, at least, and which may have been built by Freeport or some other mining company after my 1976 visit, although they may have used one of the old buildings, maybe this one).
Across from the shack stands the dark, often silhouetted skeleton of an old mill (see this photo), swaying and creaking and rumbling in the wind. I look at the rocks scattered around the rusty old mill and see a lot of chunks of weathered quartz vein, leftovers from the district’s historic mining. I ponder the strange batch of unfamiliar rocks. I’m completely baffled.
Looking away from the rocks around the mill, I look up toward the mountain, noticing how far it is to the main part of the Mary-Drinkwater complex, up a road I won’t be able to access in my Opel. The view of the stark, nearly treeless mountain—something I wasn't used to back then, having just arrived in the west from my forested, eastern previous life—conspires to make my goal recede away from me, up the oddly elongated road into terrain that looks more formidable than seems possible, even given the area’s legitimately barren countenance.
Remnants of the mill continue to make eerie, creaking sounds. The place is ghostly, almost haunted. I’m unreasonably spooked.
I make my way through the wreckage and the leaverite rocks. I marvel at the view—the broad reaches of the basin more than 2000 feet below, the ragged heights of the ridges more than 1100 feet above.
I survey the wide expanse of Clayton Valley to the east and the confusion of hills and mountains beyond. The red and black cone of The Crater, formed of steeply reposing cinders, rests below me at the junction of fan and basin. Behind me, the northeastern slopes of Mineral Ridge—cut by various canyons and gulches, scrabbly-looking and with loose and fragmented rocks just waiting to give way beneath an unsuspecting boot—are capped by a nearly horizontal surface and by two slanted, oval mounds of rock that rise above that surface, one to an elevation of nearly 8400 feet. After a while I hike back downhill to my car. The old mill, enduring weather, time, and passing-through geologists, is now behind me. I haven’t lost the creepy feeling; in fact, it has intensified. I stop to look over my shoulder a few times, feeling strongly like I’m being watched or followed. Surely a mountain lion is behind me, stalking, as they sometimes do when you’re out in the field walking around by yourself. They aren’t usually up to any mischief: They’re just curious. Back then, however, I wasn’t used to things like that, and I couldn’t shake the eerie feeling. Nevertheless, when I got back to my car, I made camp, albeit just a little farther down the road.
Will this be the spot? I have one more place to visit.

My goal in trying to gain access to Mineral Ridge was to check out the Mary Mine: It was one of several old mines on my list of possible thesis areas. In order to see what I was trying to do, let's look once again at the maps. And remember from my previous three posts about the Silver Peak area, there were no mines shown on the old 2° map, so I won’t show that map again: The 2° sheet was useless to me.

As we can see above, Spurr had the Drinkwater located up the old road, the one that is still hand-rocked in a couple places. Spurr put the Mary Mine at the site of an old mill complex, and he placed the Last Chance Mine in Custer Gulch, which is south to southeast of Eagle Canyon. The old mill isn't shown on the 15' map, and Custer Gulch isn't named.
The Drinkwater, probably a single operating mine or even a single claim when Spurr visited in 1906, was shown on the 1963 map above—and on the 1987 map below—as a complex of shafts, adits, and prospects near the head of Eagle Canyon (and now it's covered in part by a more recent open pit). It was the Drinkwater complex that I could see from below, and it was what I headed for when I left my Opel.
As for the Mary Mine itself, for this narrative I'll take it as the adit located not far above Spurr's location. And I’ll take the Last Chance Mine as the set of shafts, adits, and prospects in Custer Gulch (see below).

I parked the Opel—as near as I can tell from my 1976 memory and from the memory I have of going up and down that road several, I mean innumerable, times in the 1980s and 1990s (mostly down, because that was the most impressive direction to travel, last attempted in 2000 when the road didn’t go through due to locked gates)—on the "road" (remember, the road was washed out) just below the red/blue arrow.
As for the old road, maybe you can see it here on this enlarged Google Earth view, up near the pass to the other side of the hill near the Oromonte and Wedge Mines, where I used to work back in the 1980s. A good portion of the hand-rocked road has been destroyed since I last drove it sometime in the 1990s.

The view driving down the old road was truly spectacular, and the drive was breathtaking, even hair-raising if you had never seen a road like that. The road was incredibly narrow, wide enough to drive down but no wider, and it was quite rocky. The effect, for the driver, was one of intensified concentration: It was an exercise in dodging rocks and making sure the left tires never went over the edge. The edge, a seemingly endless drop off to the north, was ever present, right there where a driver might usually prefer to place the left-front tire (once the left-front or right-front tire is placed, according to one’s best judgement hopefully based on past experience, the position of the rest of the vehicle, in this case a mid-80s Ford half-ton pickup, naturally follows). I thought of it as the scenic route: a route not taken daily because it took longer to get back to Silver Peak, a route that took even longer as a side trip on the way back to Reno from the south. It was also a fun route, fun because I could navigate the road with aplomb: I could dodge this rock to the left or right by careful placement of the front tires; I could make sure the front differential missed some critically high or pointed rock near the center of the road; I could place the left tire as close to the nearly overhung edge as needed, providing that the berm, if present, wasn't too soft to drive on.

After hiking uphill a ways, I come to the part of the road that curves around an unused core shack (which is there from my future memory, at least, and which may have been built by Freeport or some other mining company after my 1976 visit, although they may have used one of the old buildings, maybe this one).
Across from the shack stands the dark, often silhouetted skeleton of an old mill (see this photo), swaying and creaking and rumbling in the wind. I look at the rocks scattered around the rusty old mill and see a lot of chunks of weathered quartz vein, leftovers from the district’s historic mining. I ponder the strange batch of unfamiliar rocks. I’m completely baffled.

Finding a Thesis: The Northern Route onto Mineral Ridge and a Little Geology

And now, I'll go into the geology of Mineral Ridge just a little, as per my memory from work done there in the mid-late 1980s and published work available online or in journals I have on hand.

Two notes worth mentioning: 1) I've labeled the seds of the upper plate as "ЄpЄ" because although the upper plate rocks are dominantly Cambrian, there may be some late Precambrian rocks in one area, and 2) The Reed Dolomite is often shown as straddling the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary, but it is sometimes assigned exclusively to either the Precambrian or Cambrian. I'm treating it here as ЄpЄ.
The low-angle fault shown in dark-red above—it’s somewhat left of center—places tilted dark rocks, presumably of the upper plate, over seemingly less tilted or nearly flat-lying, orangey Reed Dolomite. The Reed is usually placed in the lower plate of the detachment (as it is here), but rarely, as in this article, it is placed in the upper plate. I place it in the lower plate or treat it as its own structural plate, as in this abstract, which unfortunately cannot be read online without some rigamarole (or maybe can't be read at all).
The Reed Dolomite is very thin on Mineral Ridge, it’s possibly attenuated, and it often looks microbrecciated. Although not obviously ductiley deformed, carbonates such as the Reed can be ductiley deformed and not show it: they can heal and recrystallize as fast deformation can occur, making ductile fabrics—if any formed—difficult to identify.
I’ve marked this probable detachment surface—in the labeled photos above and below—in dark red, to contrast with the bright red of what I know to be the Mineral Ridge detachment fault.

Because from a distance the tilted dark-colored rocks look to me like Tertiary volcanic rocks, I'll add another side note: A small hill of Tv occurs south of the Oromonte and Wedge Mines (south to SSW of the Mary-Drinkwater complex). When I mapped in the area, I wondered if the reddish volcanic unit exposed on that small hill was tilted as part of the upper plate, or untilted as part of a younger unit erupted after detachment faulting ceased. I don’t really remember my conclusion. On this map (Diamond and Ingersoll, 2003, p. 464), the Tv is post-detachment and lying on top of Te (Tertiary Esmeralda Formation), which I recall as being tilted (the Te is in the upper plate of the detachment fault, whereas the Tv overlaps the detachment fault and therefore post-dates it).
Aaaand, back to 1976:
Onward I drive: up the coalesced alluvial fans emanating from New York, Echo, and Eagle Canyons, Custer and Great Gulches, and other lesser gulches and canyons. I was finally on the northern approach to the Mary Mine and the top of Mineral Ridge.

Still in the Opel, I carefully meander up the sandy dry wash until I come right up against a 50-foot-high wall of dirt and rock: Instead of a road, I’m looking at a filled-in canyon between two cliffy ledges. I know the road continues on, somewhere beyond this pile of debris, but I can't get to it! I walk around, searching unsuccessfully for a go-around or bladed connection between the washed-out road and the rest of the road.
Resigned to hiking, I park in the sand wash, carefully pointing the car downhill for a quick getaway; I get my field gear and maps out of my car and start walking up the hill toward the Mary and Drinkwater Mines.

Hiking Down Glass Mountain
A few weeks ago, we were about to hike back down Glass Mountain after our short hike part way up the glassy rhyolite flow dome. We had taken some overview photos and had stopped at the old working in the foreground (above) to collect some scouring stones. (And then we went off on a float-testing tangent.)
I had vowed to myself, and to MOH, to keep my eye out for some reddish, oxidized glass on the way down...
The pile of obsidian and pumice rubble is eroding from a part of the rhyolite flow that includes dense, black obsidian, white to tan-colored pumiceous rhyolite, and reddish brown to reddish orange oxidized rhyolite glass.
The oxidized and probably partly devitrified (?) obsidian always seemed to be perched on the treacherously glassy scree slopes above the road we were hiking on. I didn't find any good examples of the orangey rock along the road, and I wasn't about to go climbing over the glassy talus, without sturdy boots and leather gloves.
The photo really captures the blocky and jagged nature of the surface of the dacite flow. It wouldn't be easy to walk across that terrain; one should have very sturdy boots and equally sturdy leather or work gloves. And please don't even consider shorts!
The northern dacite flow is the darker flow area in the upper part of this Google Earth image. The rhyolite flow is the long, almost cylindrical-shaped area emanating from Glass Mountain itself, the small, grayish, round area west and a little south of center.

Finding a Thesis: On the Southern Route to the Top of Mineral Ridge
And so, we return once again to my seemingly never-ending thesis hunt. As you can see above, I've just arrived on eastern outskirts of Silver Peak, after crossing the Clayton Valley lithium brine fields.
I took a close look at my maps, and noticed that not only did the Goldfield 2° sheet not show the Mary Mine that was on my list as a possible thesis area, but that there was only one route shown onto Mineral Ridge: a dashed light gray road north of town indicating a jeep trail I would presumably not be able to traverse in my '72 Opel.
I pulled out another map. No, make that two: The area was bifurcated by two 15' maps, Silver Peak and Lida Wash.
Here I've joined the two maps together in a crude effort to create the effect of folding two maps together at the seam, as I probably did back in 1976.
On these combined maps, two routes to the Mary Mine became apparent to me: a southern and a northern route. The northern route took off from old Highway 47 (now S.R. 265), the paved road going north from Silver Peak, and headed westward along the northern side of Mineral Ridge. The southern route, Coyote Road, headed southwest out of Silver Peak and then turned westward along the southern side of Mineral Ridge toward and past Coyote Spring. Both routes are marked with double dashed lines. Another double dashed road heads nearly south for Oasis Divide, a pass over the Silver Peak Range into Fish Lake Valley.
Not knowing then what I know now—that my car would not have been able to make it up the mountain on either of these roads—I resolutely steered toward the southern route.
Supposedly there was minimum maintenance on the Coyote Road when I drove it in 2010, although the road looked good to me. It looked as good as it did in 1985-87, when the county bladed it every time it got the slightest bit washboardy.
I have no idea what the road looked like in 1976. I'm not even sure that I found the road.
From pavement in Silver Peak, I drove and drove down a wide, bladed but strongly corrugated dirt road for what seemed like miles and miles, surely at a slow speed, heading in a direction that didn’t seem quite right to me. I made it as far as some scrabbly-looking, knobby outcrops.
I drove back to Silver Peak. Was I on the right road?
Let's back up a bit on the Coyote Road―back into town, where it's still mostly paved―to it's present-day junction with the Nivloc Road.
What do our maps show? (See the maps, above.) The 1962 2° sheet shows two sub-parallel long-dashed gray roads going off to the Nivloc Mine, and no roads going up to Coyote Spring. One year later, the 1963 15' maps show double solid lines for the Nivloc Road and double dashed lines for the Coyote Road.
Which road did I take? That's a hard one to answer. My geographic memory (not always perfect but often fairly well oriented in north-south space) suggests to me that I was either on the often strongly washboarded Oasis Road or the often moderately washboarded Nivloc Road. Note: The washboard intensity of any given road means little as it will increase with time from its most recent grading (besides the other factors that affect intensity).
What about the outcrops I drove by? Had I been on the Oasis Road, it would have been more than 13 miles to the nearest outcrop, an unlikelihood given how long it would have taken in my Opel, and given that the maps said I didn't need to drive that far. On the Nivloc Road, it was about 4 miles to the first hills and a little farther, perhaps, to ones that might look "knobby." On the Coyote Road, it was about 3 miles to the first scrabbly hills, maybe a half mile or more to any exposures I might think of as knobby. Most likely I ended up on the middle road, the Nivloc. I'd have to guess that access to the top of Mineral Ridge was not much of a local or county priority in those days (as it would become by the mid-1980s), and that's why I didn’t find the possibly obscure turnoff I needed. But that is just a guess.
In any case, even if I had found the right road, in all likelihood I would not have been able to take my car much past Coyote Spring (maybe I could have made it about a mile and a half beyond the spring). I have seen some remarkable feats on that road, by people more experienced in off-road travel than I was back then, including a rather doubtful-looking but spunky Pinto driven to the top of Mineral Ridge by a driller's wife, who was delivering drill casings in the rear compartment of the hatchback, but I also know that Ford 150 4x4s of the era couldn't make the steep switchbacks on that hill in two-wheel drive, at least not without a lot of weight in the back.
At this point on my journey, it was noon or later, so I gave up on finding the southern route and drove into the town of Silver Peak.

Which road did I take? That's a hard one to answer. My geographic memory (not always perfect but often fairly well oriented in north-south space) suggests to me that I was either on the often strongly washboarded Oasis Road or the often moderately washboarded Nivloc Road. Note: The washboard intensity of any given road means little as it will increase with time from its most recent grading (besides the other factors that affect intensity).
What about the outcrops I drove by? Had I been on the Oasis Road, it would have been more than 13 miles to the nearest outcrop, an unlikelihood given how long it would have taken in my Opel, and given that the maps said I didn't need to drive that far. On the Nivloc Road, it was about 4 miles to the first hills and a little farther, perhaps, to ones that might look "knobby." On the Coyote Road, it was about 3 miles to the first scrabbly hills, maybe a half mile or more to any exposures I might think of as knobby. Most likely I ended up on the middle road, the Nivloc. I'd have to guess that access to the top of Mineral Ridge was not much of a local or county priority in those days (as it would become by the mid-1980s), and that's why I didn’t find the possibly obscure turnoff I needed. But that is just a guess.
At this point on my journey, it was noon or later, so I gave up on finding the southern route and drove into the town of Silver Peak.
