Where in the West: March 2010

The March, 2010, version of Where in the West (WITW) is really just an excuse to post a glacier picture or two. You can tell me the location or name of this glacier in the comments, and identify any glacial features you might see. As per all WITW's, the location is somewhere in the western U.S.

Portage Glacier, Alaska. (Not positive about glacier- as it has been ages, but definitely positive it is Alaska:)

Ugh- I should have paid attention to the topography in front of it!! DOH! That said, I can only think it would be the Matanuska Glacier.

Well, you got it right this time! That's the first view of the glacier that you can see when driving in from the west. I hope you weren't just going thru all AK glaciers. ;)

Nope- I was looking at the mountain tops the first time, not paying attention to the aspect that Portage is fronted by ocean. (hence my DUH! moment:) Matanuska was the only one I knew of (or been to) that wasn't. I recall the last time I went -gosh it was wayyyyy too long ago- it was a very muddy/rocky trek. It's a very slippery mud too, as I skidded and landed on my butt in the middle of it -never been one for being graceful. :)

I was being a bit facetious! :) Technically speaking, Turnagain Arm doesn't reach all the way to the Portage Glacier. Instead, there is a small lake in front of the glacier, which has grown larger since the first time I saw it.

The special aspect of Mat Glacier is that you can drive to within a couple of hundred yards of the toe, then walk up to and onto the glacier.

Alaska Al, I measured it at a quarter mile, but the measurement is approximate because maybe they've moved the parking lot since the photo was taken, or maybe the glacier has retreated since I was last there.

Measurement and more in the next post!

Hope it's not too cold up there.
